# What is sapphire crystal?

Hampden Watches feature sapphire crystal, a synthetic sapphire used to protect the watch dial.

Sapphire crystal ranks 9/10 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it second only to diamond. That makes your watch crystal highly scratch-resistant and durable for everyday wear.

While sapphire is extremely hard, it is not indestructible. Materials like diamonds or silicon carbide can still scratch it, so it's best to avoid contact with these surfaces.
